Tinted Glass

Rule 5 (1) and Rule 5 (3) of the 2000 Amendment of the Motor Vehicle Rules (Prohibition on Specific Types of Glass) stated that Tinted Glass must allow transmission of minimum level of visible light as following:

70% - Windscreen
50% - Side windows and rear glass

Exception is given only to those with:

  • Health reasons
  • Security reasons

But written application must be forwarded to the Director-General of JPJ Malaysia for approval, with the following documents:

  • CG1 Form (which can be obtained from all state JPJ headquarters for free).
  • A certified photocopy of the applicant’s identity card and the vehicle’s registration card.
  • For health reasons, a validation letter from a government medical officer and recent medical records.
  • For security reasons, an endorsement letter from the state police chief must be enclosed.

Validity of the approved exception: one year (renewable)


The renewal application must be made 3 months prior to the expiration of the  initial permission (approved exception), by submitting the same documents as above, plus a photocopy of the Tinted Window Permission Certificate.

Offenders are subject to a penalty of:

Up to RM 500.00 or a two-week jail sentence for the first offence; and
Up to RM 1000.00 or a one-month jail sentence, or both, for subsequent offences.
