JPJ: All vehicle ownership transfers to require biometric confirmation from June 1
PUTRAJAYA: All transactions for vehicle ownership transfers can only be done via
the biometric confirmation system effective June 1.
Road Transport Department (JPJ) director-general Datuk Seri Ismail Ahmad said the
system had been introduced in stages from April 1.
"Earlier, we did not make it compulsory but voluntarily. However, all such
transactions must use the biometric system from June 1," he told reporters here, Friday.
He said both the registered and new owners did not have to be present at the same
time at the counter to conduct biometric confirmation.
"The registered owner and new owner can go to any nearby JPJ counters separately
on condition the confirmation is done in seven days," he said.
Ismail said the new system would prevent a transfer of ownership without the
knowledge of the owner and reduced the role of a third party.
Furthermore, he said from June 1, ownership transfers could be done
"However, the consumer must first visit an JPJ counter to get a pin number and
make a biometric confirmation. The pin number can also be used for other transactions with the Department," he
added. - Bernama
